The Death of Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated January 30, 1948, on his way to a prayer meeting in New Delhi. The 78 year old Gandhi had begun his final fast on the January 13th, to end the fighting between the Hindu, Muslim and other groups. Mahatma didn't have any police protection, because for him, "to die by the hand of a brother... cannot be for me a matter of sorrow."
A crowd pushed around him, trying to touch the great Mahatma's feet. One man came forward, and kneeling before Gandhi, he shot Mahatma three times with a semi automatic pistol in the heart. Gandhi muttered "He Ram" which means "Oh God" and died. His murderer was Nathuram Godse, a member of a Hindu extremist group who opposed Gandhi and his acceptance of all religions.
On January 31, Mahatma was cremated on a funeral pyre on the banks of the River Jamun at Raj Ghat. More than one million people came to his funeral, which was organized as a military operation with Mahatma's body in an army vehicle. Gandhi shall always be remembered for promoting the peace and nonviolent protesting that changed the world.
